Saturday 27 June
Wickham Road, Canterbury Estates, Kernersville, NC - 10am - 2 Hours

One of the things I see a LOT in classes is the challenge of finding the right color and being unhappy with the result. Knowing the colors that are in your pans or tubes, understanding how to mix what you have to achieve a desired hue and value is essential to success. We will learn the essentials of colors, the color wheel, values, color harmony, and mixing. We'll paint a color wheel with graduated values with your own colors so that you have a reference for your own paints. We will learn to paint some color charts to understand how you can find your own colors.
Bring with you: watercolors, specifically a yellow, red, and blue for the color wheel, two water containers, pencil and eraser, several sheets watercolor paper your choice, size should be at least 8 square to accommodate the circle. The brushes I will be using are No. 6, 8 rounds.
You will walk down a grassy hill in the back yard to get to the cabin, and then back up when you go, so wear appropriate shoes.

A perfect FIRST CLASS, this beginner-oriented opportunity explores some of the enormous assortment of supplies that are marketed to watercolorists. Paper. Paints. Brushes. How many colors ARE there? How much do I need to spend? How fancy or professional does it need to be? The beginning of our time together will involve explanation of different materials that are available and how to understand what is distinct about them. After this introduction, you will have the opportunity to use samples of a variety of materials from economy to what can be used professionally. I'll provide examples of moths and butterflies as subjects for you to work from. From this experience, you should walk away with not only an understanding of the materials, but a personal opinion on how they perform for you. You should not need any materials for the class, but are welcome to bring them.

REVIEWS
I thought this was going to be more about map making than world building, but that was probably my misreading of the description. It was a lot of fun to hang around with other creatives and talk about our ideas as they were happening. The teacher was very friendly, spoke clearly and was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject.

I liked that we were in a small room in the library together so it felt like there were no distractions. I learned some techniques like the 7 heads for proportions and to use circles as joints to help anchor those intersecting parts of the body.

It was excellent. The class made me so aware of realizing just how much beauty there is in the depth perception of the city scape and landscape all around me. As I was driving about after the class I could not take my eye off of all shapes and angles. Simon explained to me how to use a few techniques to create arches, focal points and properly begin with drawing buildings and structures.

It was nice meeting Samantha, she gave me a few options as we sat and got acquainted. She gave me freedom to sketch what ever. I opted to draw several settings around the part. I was challenged to press myself in a couple of directions. If this is offered again I'd go. I would like to see a few more participants, that would be a great way for folks to learn, challenge, get to know a diverse community.

I'm an aviation nut. A retired aircraft mechanic. Most of what is created by me, has wings on it. General Chuck Yeager is the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947. This is him around 1998. It is the largest drawing I've ever done, at 24x18 inches. Graphite pencil on 100 Bristol paper. I put a lot of hours into this one, and I'm rather proud of it. It turned out better than I thought it would at the time. I did this piece in 2013. I put down my pencil in 2015 to take care of

I loved this photograph from John Strachan photography and finally got around to painting it in acrylic. I tried to be quite loose with the painting as there was so much detail. in the end I thought the sky looked a bit bare so with the help of Chat GPT I added seagulls to the photo and was then able to paint them into my art work. This painting will be heading for the Aberdeen art show the end of August for sale.
